Celebrating National School Nurse Day

National School Nurse Day will be recognized Wednesday, May 7, 2025, to highlight the critical role school nurses play in supporting health, wellness, and academic success for students in Beauregard Parish.

Ten school nurses are assigned to support the schools in the parish, providing the healthcare needed for students to thrive. They are caring, highly skilled, knowledgeable, and dedicated to keeping our students healthy and ready to learn through advocacy, communication, collaboration, leadership, ethics, and quality of practice.

School nurses analyze student assessment data, identifying and documenting appropriate health-related issues and interpreting the issues to the student, family, and appropriate school staff. The school nurse identifies short and long-term outcomes for ongoing health-related issues, recognizing and prioritizing students’ needs for written, individualized health care plans that reflect all applicable federal and state laws and regulations as well as professional standards of practice.

School nurses administer medication, serve as case managers overseeing delegated care, work with colleagues to integrate health care plans into routine school programs, and coordinate with families and school staff to promote the transition of health care plan goals into students’ school-related activities.

School nurses conduct periodic vision, hearing, and colorblind screenings per state guidelines, provide staff wellness education and evidenced-based health information, train school personnel in nursing procedures, administer medication, and teach CPR/AED, STOP the BLEED, and emergency response courses.

School nurses in Beauregard Parish schools include: Andrea Ferguson, DHS, Health Services Coordinator, Dana Primeaux, DJHS, Melissa Warner, PWE, Nikki Galloway, DES, Jessica Dear, KRH, Lauren Dowden, MHS, Emily Reeves, SHS, Sonya Cook, SBHS/SBUE, Natalie Redditt, SBE/SBUE, and Tessa Simmons, EBHS/EBE.
