Summer Learning Program in the planning stages

for Beauregard schools

Beauregard Parish schools will conduct a Summer Learning Program from June 1-July 1 for students at-risk of not meeting grade-level expectations, according to Director of Curriculum Kim Hayes.

“The Summer Learning Program will focus on learning recovery due to the disruptions faced by the schools this year,” she explained. “Students who are struggling to meet standards in the core curriculum and who may need more instructional help toward meeting their educational benchmarks will be invited to attend the summer session.”

Schools are identifying students who may benefit from extra instructional time and contacting parents with options for additional learning. The program will be conducted face-to-face on each school campus that will include indoor and outdoor activities as well as projects associated with the classroom learning.

“We are intentionally focused on engaging, fun learning activities because the summer session is not meant to be punitive,” she said, “but is provided to help our students meet the standards necessary to move forward and be successful.”

Students will participate in the summer program four days a week from 8:00 am – 12:00 noon each day. Transportation will be provided through the BPSB Transportation Department, and a grab-and-go breakfast, lunch, and snack will be provided each day by School Food Services.

In addition, the BPSB website has educational resources listed by grade level for all parents and students to access this summer to keep students engaged and moving forward with their education during the summer months, she said.

“We strongly encourage parents to make time in their summer schedule for educational activities,” she said, “because research shows that students who keep up their skills through the summer are ready to engage and move forward for the next school year.”

High school students who want to take a class for credit recovery or toward a new credit can do so through the Beauregard Virtual Program. Students should contact their school counselor no later than May 18 for scheduling.

The BVP program will be operated from each high school campus with students being able to access their coursework online. There will be a $75 fee per course.

“The Beauregard school system is proving and supporting a variety of learning opportunities for all of our students to practice and improve their educational skills over the summer,” concluded Hayes. “We encourage parents and students to take advantage of these opportunities so that students can return in the fall ready to begin the new school year.”
