CORPORAL PUNISHMENT

 

 

This Beauregard Parish School Board, by resolution, adopts the following policy and procedures for the administration of corporal punishment.

 

Section 1:

 

The only type of corporal punishment which may be administered to students by employees of this school system shall be defined and described in Section 2 hereof and may be administered by those persons designated in Section 3 hereof and only under the conditions set forth in Section 4 thereof.

 

Section 2:

 

a.

Corporal punishment for purposes of this resolution, and use in this school system is defined as, and limited to, punishing as correcting a student by striking the student on the buttocks with a paddle.

 

b.

Nothing contained here shall be interpreted as prohibiting an employee from using physical force, reasonable and appropriate under the circumstances, in defending himself/herself against a physical attack by a student or from using physical force, reasonable and appropriate under the circumstances, to restrain a student from attacking another student or employee.

 

Section 3:

 

Corporal punishment, as defined herein, may be administered by the principal or his/her designee.  Such corporal punishment shall be administered in appropriate locations within the school designated by the principal and in the presence of another member of the school staff.

 

Section 4:

 

a.

Corporal punishment can be administered in a reasonable manner by the principal or his/her designee, as a last resort to a student whose behavior is interfering with the normal operation of the classroom or school.

 

b.

Prior to the administering of corporal punishment, as is the case with other disciplinary measures, the principal or his/her designee shall advise the student of the particular misconduct of which he/she is accused as well as the basis for such accusations, and the pupil shall be given an opportunity to explain his/her version of the facts prior to imposition of such corporal punishment.

 

c.

A written explanation of the reason for the use of corporal punishment and the name of the second school official present shall be on file in the principal's office.

 

Section 5:

 

The student shall be informed before hand of the specific misbehavior which results in the use of corporal punishment.
